The laboratories are fully equipped with all modern and sophisticated equipments, which meet the needs of the undergraduate students and researchers from various fields and have well qualified technical expertise from industrial and academic backgrounds. The various labs comprehend the entire imperative aspects of Metallurgical and Materials engineering – Metallography, Heat treatment, Process metallurgy, welding metallurgy, Metal forming, Non-destructive testing, so on and so forth. The major laboratories include:
(i) Metallography Lab
This lab is meant to introduce the students to the basic fundamentals and technical aspects of metallurgy. It mainly consists of equipments that are vital for metallographic specimen preparation. The main facilities in this lab are as follows:
- Specimen Cutting Machine
- Specimen Mounting Press using bakalite
- Belt Grinding Machine
- Hand Polishing Unit
- Double Disc Polishing Unit
- Electrolytic etching unit
- Optical Microscope with image analyzer
(ii) Heat Treatment Lab
This lab offers the practical knowledge on the various heat treatment processes like annealing, solutionizing, normalizing, aging etc. The experiments are done on both ferrous and non-ferrous metals to differentiate their responses to heat treatment processes. The main facilities under this lab are:
- Muffle furnace -2
- Tubular furnace -2
- Jominy quench test apparatus -1
- Quenching baths- 2
(iii) Mechanical Testing Lab
Mechanical testing lab reveals the elastic and inelastic behavior of a material when force is applied. A mechanical test shows whether a material or part is suitable for its intended mechanical applications by measuring elasticity, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, fracture toughness, impact resistance, stress rupture, and fatigue limit. This lab offers the following facilities.
- Screw Driven universal tensile testing machine
- Fatigue testing machine
- Vickers Hardness testing Machine
- Rockwell cum Brinell Hardness testing Machine
(iv) Welding Lab
This lab provides an introduction to welding technology with an emphasis on basic welding laboratory principles and operating procedures. The main experiments include: industrial safety and health practices, hand tool and power machine use, measurement, laboratory operating procedures, welding power sources, welding career potentials, and introduction to welding codes and standards. The main facilities are as follows.
- MMA welding unit
- MIG welding unit
- TIG welding unit
- Oxy-Acetylene flame cutting
