The Department of Humanities comprises disciplines such as English, Economics, Management, and the two federal departments of Placement & Training and Physical Education. It addresses skill gaps between academia’s output and organizations’ requirements by making the graduating engineers competent in communication and interpersonal skills. The department consists of effective and experienced faculty who are highly rated in their respective areas.
Faulty communication, skimpy etiquette and scanty team skills have ruined the chances of many an engineering student in clearing placement interviews. Realizing how vital soft skills are for selection and promotion, the Management of the College has appointed adequate faculty members in Communicative English. The Language Lab with a capacity of 66 consoles, and the dept library, consisting of self-help and placement-related books, go a long way in honing the soft skills of students.
Apart from regular classes and tests, the Department organizes various programmes for students and staff. Orientation for freshers, training for the faculty and students in skill development and life skills, and participation in placement enhancement programmes are of star attraction. The Department also provides effective training to students in anchoring corporate video and major functions. Nobel Week is celebrated in the first half of November, with the cooperation of the Dept of Basic Sciences, wherein a lecture series is organised on Nobel laureates in all the six domains.
Another collaborative activity is the conduct of General Clubs like Communicative English Club, Readers’ Club, Movie Club, Music Club, Oratory Club, Health & Yoga Club etc. The entire faculty of the department is substantially involved in the placement -related activities of the College like mock interviews, group discussions and fine-tuning of résumé. Recently a major webinar and a digital conclave were conducted to explore the diverse aspects of digital systems for student engagement and online teaching models to tackle the digital transformation happening all over the nation.
The College has a vibrant Placement Cell equipped with 10 personal interview cubicles. Mock interviews--technical and general--, group discussions and aptitude tests are conducted regularly with the cooperation of the departmental Career Enhancement cells. Numerous companies visit our campus every year as part of their campus recruitment drive.
Physical Education includes regular coaching in sports, chess and group games such as Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Cricket, Badminton, Table tennis and Kabaddi. ARENA, an all-Kerala inter-engineering college basketball tournament, is an annual programme of Amal Jyothi. House-wise competitions in sports and games for both students and staff are yet another attractive feature.
