They gave students a description about the purpose of the club and also some instructions which the students must follow for the better functioning of the club. Roll numbers were given to the students and attendance was taken.
The students were then asked to give a self-introduction. Apart from the usual topics of name, class and native place, each student was asked to explain why he or she choose the BUILDTECH club and what their expectations are, about the same.
After the introductory session, club members discussed about the future plans and activities of the club. It was decided that every activity carried out by the club should emphasis on creating awareness on the members about the different aspects of the construction technology. As a part of this, a program-calendar was set up, indicating the activities for the coming weeks.

Buildtech club meeting commenced at 11.55 am. All the members gathered on time. Attendance was taken and majority of the members were present.
As per program-schedule, today's club hour is set apart for seminar on world famous structures. The seminar commenced with the presentation of the sixth group.
GROUP 6 - WORLD TRADE CENTRE
Speaker from the group came forward with the necessary material and gave an information rich talk on the uniqueness of the no-more existing World Trade Centre. The constructional and architectural details of the structure were quoted. The causes which led to the failure of the WTC were also well explained.
GROUP 5 - PETRONAS TWIN TOWERS
Speaker from the group took on the front and gave an excellent seminar on the Petronas twin towers which was the world tallest building till recently. He also explained about the spikes in the top of the tower which once made it the tallest building in the world.
GROUP4- HOOVER DAM
Hoover dam which is also known as Boulder Dam was well explained by the speaker from the group. It is a concrete gravity-arch dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. The fact that it is the biggest dam complex in the world and that it got it's name from former US president Herbert Hoover who supported its construction, amazed all the members.
GROUP 3- GOL GUMBAZ
Speaker from group 3 took on the podium to give an enlightening speech on
Gol Gumbaz, one of the most unique architectural master piece in India. The tomb, located in the city of Bijapur, or Vijapur in Karnataka, southern India, was built in 1659. Its exceptional features, like the whispering gallery which echoes the sound 30 times and the second largest dome unsupported by any pillars, were highlighted.
GROUP 2 LEANING TOWER OF PISA
All the members of the Group 2 actively participated in the presentation. They coined together a wonderful seminar on the leaning tower of Pisa and clearly showed that despite its name, the tower is actually slightly curved. They showcased the reason why it still stands today as a stable structure. The names of the 7 bells of the bell tower inspired the entire club.
GROUP 1 SEARS TOWER, CHICAGO
Speaker from Group 1 came forward and gave precise speech about the superior modern architectural quality of the sears tower and how it was once the tallest tower in the world and how it is still the tallest, on account of the number of floors occupied.
Each group presented their seminars with adequate photographs of their structures. Students took note of important points, and the presentation was, in a whole, very informative.
The last few minutes were spent discussing the program for next week. As per the program schedule, the next club hour is set apart for a 'site visit', for understanding the different aspects of construction like foundation, columns, beams, lintels etc. It was finally decided that the construction activities at the Central Complex Building of AJCE may be visited and studied.
The session was dispersed at 12.55 pm.

CLUB ACTIVITY WEEKLY REPORT (Report No. 4)

TIME : 11.55 AM
VENUE : RB 207
The club members reported their attendance and majority of the members were present. As per the club-calendar, today's activity was 'construction site visit'. The Central Complex Block of the college which is under construction was selected as the site. Prior permission was taken from the site supervisor Mr.Vinod and other concerned authorities.
Mr.Vinod, site supervisor, AJCE, Sr.Claramma Rosary, Ms.Jiss Abraham and Ms.Diana Annet George explained about the various constructional aspects of the building. The column footings of the car porch were being built and the students were fortunate to see and understand the same. Mr.Vinod explained about speciality in the construction of the car porch in the Central Complex Block.
Sr.Rosary explained about the various types of beams, slabs and their purposes. Ms.Jiss Abraham explained about lintels, R.C.C. staircases and plinth beams along with their purposes. Ms.Diana Annet George gave a class on columns, form work and shuttering. Beams, plinth beams, columns, slabs, lintel etc. were made familiar to the students.
The site visit lasted for around 45 minutes. Within this limited time period, the faculties effectively explained about the various parts of construction. The students gathered an idea about different steps involved in the construction of a building. The site supervisor suggested that a 'field visit' may be arranged every month, since practical knowledge should be given importance in addition to the 'theory of construction' gained from the classes.
After the visit, the members assembled in the club room and discussed about the future activity. As per our club-calendar, the next club hour is dedicated for a lecture on 'vasthuvidya' by an expert, but due to inconvenience of the resource person, the program is postponed. So, it is planned that during the next club hour, a lecture class on drawing building-plans may be handled by the faculties of AJCE from Dept. of Civil engineering.
Club dispersed at 12:50 p.m.
Program for next week: lecture class on 'how to interpret and prepare drawings of building plans'. |
